Eleven English amateurs in British Open final qualifying

23 July 2010

Eleven English amateurs will tee up at Hillside Golf Club on Monday in final qualifying for the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

Curtis Cup players Hannah Barwood (Knowle), Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) and Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton) will be joined by seven players who came through pre-qualifying at The Berkshire.

England international Hannah Burke (Mid-Herts) led the way at pre-qualifying when, alongside Korean amateur Julie Yang, she shot four-under par 68.

Fourteen-year-old Charley Hull (Woburn) was fifth at The Berkshire on one-under 71. Five players were in a group sharing 12th place on level par: Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry), Charlotte Dalton (Ladbrook Park), Lucy Williams (Mid-Herts), English mid-amateur champion Sian James (Bristol & Clifton), and Emma Sheffield (Newark). Jess Wilcox (Blankney) just beat the cut when she shot one-over 73 to share 23rd place.

The 11 amateurs will be among a field of 90 golfers from 27 different countries who will be playing for 14 places in the championship, which takes place at Royal Birkdale from 29 July to 1 August.

British amateur champion Kelly Tidy, a member of Royal Birkdale, is already in the championship field.
