21 July 2010
England’s Emily Taylor staged a classy display to finish fourth in the mixed international field at the R&A’s biennial Junior Open for U16s, which was played over Lundin Golf Club’s links course in Fife.
Emily, 15, from Royal Lytham and St Annes, was also second best girl in the event with a 54-hole total of 218. She opened with a one-under par 70, added a second round 76 and signed off with a very good 72 in miserably wet, cold and windy conditions.
Emily commented: “It was really hard out there, just awful weather.” However, in the last round she had birdies at the first and eighth and dropped only one shot, at the fourth, in turning in one-under 35.She battled through the inward half in seven pars and two bogeys, at the 12th and 16th, for 37 home.
The R&A invites all its affiliated nations to enter their best U16 boy and girl golfers in the Junior Open and almost 80 countries were be represented. The competition started in 1994 and is closely linked to The Open Championship. It is staged every two years and played on a nearby course.
This year’s winner was Japan’s Kenta Konishi, 16, who was four shots clear of the field on two-under 211. The leading girl was Hyo-Joo Kim from South Korea, who was also joint runner-up on 215. Emily finished a shot ahead of the New Zealand’s Cecilia Cho who plays off plus-five and is the reigning Australian women's open amateur champion.
This season, Emily has also won the Scottish U16 open strokeplay championship and the girls’ title at the Fairhaven Trophies. On both occasions she set a course record in the final round.
