Kyra Horlock, 14, wins South West title

Wiltshire 14-year-old Kyra Horlock won the South West regional championship at China Fleet Country Club, Saltash, Cornwall.
Kyra, who is already the Wiltshire county champion, is a member of EWGA’s Select South West Squad. She defeated Melissa McMahon of Dorset in the final. The losing semi-finalists were Gloucestershire’s Bethan Popel, who recently won the Harper Salver, and Dorset’s Georgia Hall, the 2009 English U13 champion.
The qualifying rounds produced excellent play with plenty of sub-par golf. Gloucestershire’s Shelby Smart led the way with a new course record of three-under par 73; four players shot one-under 72 and another scored 71.
The leading qualifier was Katie Rule (Cornwall) with two steady rounds of 72, while the best handicap score was returned by Natia Spencer (Devon) who shot net 67, 66, playing off 18.
The players had to contend with some heavy showers on the first two days but the finals were played early and successfully avoided a torrential downpour. However there were strong winds throughout the event. The championship was contested by players from six counties: Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.
