Nottinghamshire’s Janet Melville scores a senior hat trick
09 July 2010
Nottinghamshire’s Janet Melville has claimed a hat trick of victories in a regional seniors' tournament.
Janet, from Sherwood Forest, scored a one-shot win in the 36-hole senior English women’s midlands regional tournament at Walmley Golf Club, Warwickshire. She is the first player to hold the trophy three times.
On the previous two occasions Janet – a senior international – won by the margin of nine shots. This time she was involved in a tight tussle with her playing partner Anne Bridges (Mentmore).
Anne shared the first round lead when she returned an opening 78, one shot better than Janet. The deficit was wiped out on the first hole of the second round and Janet moved in to the lead on the second hole. However Anne scored an eagle three on the ninth and the two players reached the turn on level terms.
A birdie on the 10th put Janet two clear and she extended her lead to three shots with another birdie on the 12th. But Anne struck back with a birdie on the 14th and another on the difficult 16th, which Janet bogeyed.
Crucially, though, Janet parred the 17th, while her opponent bogeyed the hole and the title was again hers when both players took three on the short 18th.
Janet, a former British champion and winner of the English senior strokeplay title, was quick to pay tribute to her caddy for his accurate club selection on the last which helped her to a par and to maintain her lead.
Division B was won by Pauline Olliver (Burnham Beeches) who edged ahead of Julie Rawdon (Stoneham) and Marie Watson (Chesterfield) on countback.
