England’s girls lose to Spain in European championship
08 July 2010
England bowed out of the medal hunt in the European girls’ team championship at Aalborg Golf Club, Denmark, when they lost to Spain 3½-1½ in the quarter finals.
“It’s been a tough day,” said team captain Faye Sanderson. “And it rained heavily this afternoon which only added to the grim atmosphere.”
England will now play for position in the top flight, while today’s four winners go on to contest the medals. “Fifth is the best we can do and that’s what we are aiming for,” said Faye. Their opponents tomorrow will be the hosts, Denmark.
The team lost both morning foursomes, although for a long time it looked as though Kelly Tidy and Heidi Baek would win their point. They went down for the first time on the 15th and were unable to regain the upper hand, finally losing on the last.
Kelly, the British champion, scored a good win in the singles. Lauren Taylor battled hard but was unable to overcome her opponent and, with the overall result decided, Heidi’s match was declared a half.
In the day’s other matches France beat Finland 3-2, Sweden beat Belgium 4-1, Ireland, the defending champions, beat Denmark 3½-1½.

England’s girls qualify for European championship matchplay
07 July 2010
Suffolk’s Heidi Baek led England into the championship matchplay flight at the European girls’ team championship with a superb two-under par 69 at Aalborg Golf Club, Denmark.
The Felixstowe Ferry player, who was playing last, birdied the 18th, as did British champion Kelly Tidy - and their efforts pulled England out of a three-way tie for the last qualifying spot and into sixth place.
England captain Faye Sanderson said: “Those birdies were crucial. If we had finished level with Finland and Germany we would have lost out on countback.
The top eight teams contest the championship flight while the other nations play for places. England were borderline after the first day’s play and Faye said: “We knew there was no leeway.”
Lauren Taylor (Woburn), who is making her debut at this level returned a steady 77. Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) made a very good birdie on the 18th to finish on four over 75.
Finally Heidi brought in the vital score with immaculate golf. She reached the turn at two-under par, thanks to birdies on eight and nine. She dropped her only shot of the round on the short 11th but finished with that all-important birdie
“Heidi was brilliant,” said Faye. “When she made her birdie it put us one shot ahead of Denmark and we knew we would finish sixth.” The score of Alex Peters (Notts Ladies’) was discounted.
England will play third qualifiers, Spain, in the first matchplay round.

Suffolk’s Heidi Baek led the scoring for England in the first qualifying round of the European girls’ team championship at Aalborg Golf Club, Denmark.
Heidi (Felixstowe Ferry) shot two-over par 73 in difficult, windy conditions. She was followed by Lauren Taylor (Woburn), who is making her debut at this level and impressed with 75 in the worst of the weather.
British champion Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) was disappointed to bogey four of the last five holes but her five-over score contributed to the team total and helped them in to a share of seventh place. Alex Peters (Notts’ Ladies) shot 82 and her score was discounted.
After tomorrow’s second round the top eight teams will go forward to the championship flight of the matchplay stages. England captain Faye Sanderson is looking forward to a low-scoring day : “We are borderline at the moment and we need a good day tomorrow.
