Yorkshire win North region County Match Week
02 July 2010
Yorkshire are heading to the finals of the English Counties’ Championship after they won the North region County Match Week. The series is supported by Virgin Atlantic.
Yorkshire booked their place at September’s County Finals at Kedleston Park, Derbyshire, when they scored their fifth successive win of the week at Carlisle Golf Club.
They will join Dorset from the South West region, Hertfordshire from the East, Lincolnshire from Midlands North, Northamptonshire for Midlands South and Sussex from the South.
Yorkshire completed their perfect record at County Match Week with a 6-3 win over Cheshire, despite trailing 1-2 after the morning foursomes. In the singles, only Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild – the English strokeplay champion - managed to secure her point for her county.
The victory gives Yorkshire an opportunity to enhance their national record. They have been English Counties’ Champions 10 times and have additionally once shared the title. They last won in 2008 and that was their fifth successive success in this competition.
Lancashire, the defending national champions, finished the County Match Week with four points and were runners-up.
Final day’s results:
Lancashire beat Northumberland 8½-½
