Dorset’s Georgia Hall is English U15 champion

29 July 2010

Dorset’s Georgia Hall staged an action replay when she led from start to finish to win the English girls’ U15 championship at Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.

A year ago, Georgia won the English U13 title in exactly the same style. The only difference was that the winning margin this year was bigger – seven shots, instead of two.

“I’m really happy and very pleased with the way I did it,” said Georgia, 14, from Ferndown, who was six-under par for the 72-hole event.

She established her lead on the first day with an excellent five-under par 68 and followed up with two rounds of level par before signing off with a one-under 72.

“My goal was to score not worse than par in any round and I managed it,” she said. “I didn’t think the course would suit me because I hit it quite long and this course is tight – but I didn’t use my driver all week!”

Throughout the tournament Georgia’s closest challenger was Cheshire’s Bronte Law, (Bramhall) who finished the championship as runner-up.

As the two girls set out on the final 36 holes they were separated by four shots, but, with one round to play, Georgia had extended her lead to six. However Bronte battled back over the first nine holes of the final round, reducing the deficit to two shots with the help of a pair of birdies.

“It was quite tight at the start of the round and Bronte got to within two shots of me,” said Georgia. “But then I eagled the ninth and had birdies on 10, 12 and 13 to get to eight-under par.”

She dropped a couple of shots on the way in, but her low-scoring run put her out of reach of her opponent. However, Georgia didn’t allowed herself to think about winning until she was almost at the end of her round. “I was just thinking shot by shot, hole by hole.”

Bronte completed the tournament on one-over par while Emma Harris (Peel Ladies’) was four shots further back, helped by a final round score of one-under par.

Dorset’s Georgia Hall leads English U15 championship

28 July 2010

Dorset’s Georgia Hall scored level par 73 to keep her grip on the lead at the halfway stage of the English girls’ U15 championship at Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.

It keeps her at five-under par for the tournament and four shots ahead of Cheshire’s Bronte Law, who also returned a second round 73.

Georgia’s round included the highlight of two eagles in three holes, both par fives. She reduced the ninth to a three-wood, four-iron and a 10ft putt; and followed up on the 11th with a six-iron, four-iron and then holed a full shot with her 52-degree wedge.

“I was up and down apart from that and I finished on level par, but I’ll take that score – and the lead,” said Georgia, who won last year’s English U13 title.

Bronte Law is looking forward to challenging for that lead over tomorrow’s final 36 holes. “Tomorrow should be good,” said the 15-year-old from Bramhall.

She described her second round as steady, after a “rough” start when she had a double bogey on the second. “I managed to keep going and birdied the 8th and 9th which got me back to level. Then I had another birdie on the 10 and only dropped one on the way in.

“I played steady golf, just fairways and greens, but I didn’t hole many putts,” added Bronte.

Emma Harris, of Peel Ladies on the Isle of Man, beat par with a one-under 72. The 15-year-old had a very tidy card, with two birdies and just one bogey, and is level par after two rounds.

There’s a five shot gap to the next player, Ellie Goodall of Selby, who has scored 77, 74 and is on five-over par.

The leading 36 players and ties – a total of 38 girls - made the 36-hole cut which fell at 166.

Georgia Hall shoots five-under par in English U15 championship

27 July 2010

Dorset’s Georgia Hall set a sizzling pace in the first round of the English girls’ Under 15 championship at Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, with a five-under par 68.

Georgia – who won last year’s English U13 title – had seven birdies and one double bogey in her round and said:  “I am very chuffed with that.”

The 14-year-old from Ferndown leads the field by four shots. Her closest challenger is Cheshire’s Bronte Law (Bramhall), who scored one-under par 72 despite feeling unwell.

Both girls have just returned from the European Young Masters in Hungary where they finished joint seventh in the individual table. “Playing in Hungary gave me a big boost for this, I learned gallons there,” said Georgia. “It gave me a lot of confidence to come seventh in Europe.”

She scorched her way to the turn with five birdies and four pars on the outward half. After two more birdies, on the 10th and 13th, she reached seven-under par,  when she dropped her only shots of the round, with a double bogey on the short 14th.

“We had to wait about 20 minutes there, but it just wasn’t a very good hole,” said Georgia, who missed the green and then three-putted. But on the next she got a very good par, after her tee shot finished in trees, and she played steadily in.

“I didn’t hit a driver all day, I decided after my practice round to use my three-wood or hybrid because the most important thing on this course is to keep it straight.  My putting was very good as well.”

Bronte Law was unwell last week during the European Young Masters and still feels off colour  - but still managed to beat par.

The 15-year-old was three-under after a run of birdies in the early part of the back nine, but she double bogeyed  the 17th after tangling first with a bunker and then three-putting.  “I only had the one bad hole,” said Bronte. “But I’ll take that, I thought it was tough out there.”

Emma Harris, from Peel Ladies’ on the Isle of Man, currently holds third place with a solid one-over par score of 74. The 14-year-old, who is playing in this event for the first time, started with an eagle three on the first.

She’s one ahead of Aimee Ponte  (Royal Guernsey) 75, while a group of four players share fifth place on three-over 76: Nicola Callander (Mill Green), Holly Morgan (Lees Hall), Amy Taylor (Hinckley) and Kyra Horlock (Broadstone).
